In celebration of Women's History Month, we pay tribute to Jennie Lawver Clinton—a niece of Captain Jack and k it would be appropriate to change the wording to : and one of the youngest survivors amongst the Modoc POWs exiled to Indian Territory in 1873 following the Modoc War. A preacher by calling, she assisted in the founding of the Sprague River Quaker Church and became renowned for her beadwork as well as her role as a cherished keeper of historical knowledge. Although a reservation census recorded her birth in 1859, other sources suggest she was born earlier, and she may have reached the age of 102 by the time of her passing in Oregon, making her the oldest survivor of the Modoc War.

The Native American culture and community that encompasses Oklahoma State University is vital to student success. Therefore, we would like to invite high school students from your Tribe to the OSU campus. Students will experience firsthand the community that helps develop more Native American college graduates than any other school in the country.

We're proud to host First Nations Day on Thursday, March 27. Our hope is that your high school student citizens will join us as we celebrate Native American culture and student success. Students will have the opportunity to tour campus, connect with and learn from current OSU students and campus partners and hear directly from OSU's Center for Sovereign Nations.

Elected council members Braxton Graham, Gina McGaughey, and Ramona Rosiere along with Modoc Nation Homelands employees KenSandusky and Brian Herbert are in attendance at the 2025 Lower Klamath Basin Renaissance Tour. The purpose of this tour is to highlight the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuges importance to the Basin and to unite around discussions involving water and wildlife.

Leadership Summit!

The 2025 Native Youth in Food and Agriculture Leadership Summit, set for July 10-18, is open to American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian youth ages 18-24 (including recently graduated high school seniors).

Melting snow is making for plenty water right now in the Homelands, slowly filling Lower Klamath Lake. Some units are receiving water for the first time in many years. Birds and other wildlife are returning and there is a magic in the air you just have to feel for yourself. February 21 is International Mother Language Day - a day to celebrate our Modokni language and Indigenous languages worldwide! 🌎

The idea for International Mother Language Day stemmed from Bangladesh, was approved by the 1999 UNESCO General Conference, and has been observed worldwide since 2000. To learn more about the importance of language and cultural preservation, see: https://www.unesco.org/en/days/mother-language

IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) re

IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) recently published an evaluation of IMLS Native Community Grant Programs. Notable in this report was a Native American Library Services Grant awarded to Modoc Nation, which allowed for storytelling sessions for our young Maklaks, computer skills training services for adults, and other activities integrating culture and language. Through this grant (as well as support from Modoc Nation's CCDF Program) healthy cooking kits (featured in the photo) were provided to children to promote intergenerational learning.

On February 8, 1887, the Dawes Act was passed, authorizing the president of the United States to subdivide tribal communal land into allotments for tribal heads of households and individuals. Modoc Nation is seeking candidates for the elected position of Tribal Judge. To be considered for candidacy, applicants must live within 50 miles of Miami, OK. Application may be found here: https://modocnation.com/judge-application/
